ODESSA, TX – Brooks Landgraf, a fourth generation West Texan and local attorney, announces that he is running for State Representative in District 81. Landgraf is seeking the open seat’s Republican nomination in the upcoming Primary election on March 4, 2014.
Landgraf looks forward to the opportunity to continue carrying on the strong values of West Texas while bringing a new conservative energy to the state capitol.
“I am committed to our time-honored West Texas principles of freedom, self-reliance and integrity,” Landgraf stated. “On top of that, I possess a new conservative energy and I will boldly represent our values to build a stronger region and Lone Star state for current and future generations.”
Brooks Landgraf's new conservative energy will be a strong voice for West Texas. Landgraf is a native son of Odessa whose family has been ranching in West Texas for five generations. Brooks helps manage his family's cow-calf operation and mineral interests; he knows first-hand what it takes for a small business to make payroll and the damaging impact over-regulation can have on our economy. Landgraf is also an experienced business lawyer who has worked in the oil and gas and health care industries.
“I feel called to serve our region and I put our community first,” Landgraf explained. “I have the experience and the energy to fight for this district and advocate for the needs of my fellow West Texans.”
A Permian High School alum, Brooks attended Texas A&M University, where he received U.S. Army training in the Corps of Cadets and served as the leader of the university's student senate. After graduating cum laude from Texas A&M, Landgraf earned his law degree from the St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio, where he also served as the editor-in-chief of the law review.
Following law school, Brooks immediately returned home to West Texas and represented energy producers and other local businesses while working at the Shafer, Davis, O'Leary & Stoker law firm in Odessa. While in private practice, he was named volunteer of the year by Legal Aid for his pro bono efforts. Currently, Landgraf is chief counsel for Medical Center Health System, the largest health care provider in the Permian Basin.
Prior to practicing law, Brooks gained legislative experience as well as energy policy insight by working as an aide to U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, a Texas Republican who chaired the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Back home in Texas, he has continued to use and develop his legislative skills by fighting for Permian Basin groups such as Odessa College, local public schools and West Texas taxpayers at the state capitol. Showcasing his true grit, loyalty and vitality, Landgraf ensured every bill he fought for on behalf of his fellow West Texans passed in the Legislature.
Dedicated to giving back to the community that has given so much to him, Brooks actively volunteers his time to help West Texas. Landgraf serves on the Midland-Odessa Transportation Alliance board of directors, the Education Foundation board of directors, and the John Ben Shepperd Leadership Institute advisory council. A proud Eagle Scout, Brooks has also been a leader in the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of the state advisory council of YMCA Youth & Government. Landgraf continues to mentor young adults through the Odessa Teen Court program.
Brooks and his wife, Shelby, whose family is from Andrews, are proud to call West Texas their home. They enjoy volunteering together for Food 2 Kids, Catholic Charities and UTPB, and the couple loves spending time together working on the family cattle ranch. They attend St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Odessa.
